Mud meets silt - the day after

Muddy creek at its highest
It has been a wet summer so far. Yesterday, for the second time in three weeks, we experienced torrential rain for more than 24 hours. Within hours, the creek rose rapidly. The river followed soon thereafter. Our second bridge across the creek was destroyed by the water. Again, we had to evacuate the beach. A vast number of land slides can be found along the river between here and Raven.

My water hole - flooded
Today morning it cleared up. Still, lots of driftwood is coming down the river, along with the occasional treasure (we harvested an empty jerrycan, a piece of plywood and a broken plastic container).

Amongst useful things, we also find quite a bit of garbage along the river
When I went up the creek today morning, Lance caught up with me just as I had reached the creek where the bridge had been. In his usual manner, he was bolting past me. Too late he realized that the bridge was gone, and in the blink of an eye he made up his mind (I could hear his thoughts: have to stop – no, cannot stop – oh no – have to jump) and tried to jump across the creek – he landed in the middle of it. Luckily, the creek had already slowed down; had Lance attempted his stunt yesterday, he might have been swept away.

Here is Lance on the other side of the creek – still wet but in good spirits.

Clearing up
*While the creek is usually clear, the river carries lots of glacial silt until late in the fall. With all that rain, the creek picked up rocks, sand, trees and dirt.
Impressive pictures! Water is so powerful... stay safe you all!!!

Your Lance reminds me of my Smidgen a few springs ago at Wolf Creek. The water was high and rushing, and being a water-lover, she didn't think twice about jumping in. With great difficulty we finally got her out, and we thought, "OK, she knows now." Not two minutes later, I see that she readies herself to jump in again and only stopped after being startled by my yelp. Maybe yours will be smarter! lol
ReplyDeleteI am just wondering what you're going to do with that broken plastic container.
ReplyDeleteDid Lance jump back in/over to get back to you?
Thanks girls! Yes, Michi, it IS powerful and the effects of its doings (like land slides and new sand bars) are most impressive - as long as nobody gets hurt. Carole, you still have your Smidgen, right? Mara, the plastic container - I am waiting for some sort of inspiration there. And Lance, he walked back across a bit further down the creek, where it's wider and not so deep.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! I love your interpretation of Lance's thoughts when he realized that the bridge was missing! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteHi there. Lorac told me about your blog and said that I would like it and I do. You are living the life that I dream about out in the beautiful open spaces. (Unfortunately, my wife is totally the city girl so it will have to remain a dream).
ReplyDeleteCongrats by the way on your recent induction as Canadians.
very interesant blog
ReplyDeleteWell, it seems you are very busy "collecting" and preparing for the cold and dark months of the year...
ReplyDeleteHope you are all right!
