Hibernation, Adieu!

By Lance

It has been way too long since they posted on the blog. I told them, but nobody seems to find the time to write. Now I am taking things into my paws!

Life has been quiet, cold, white and busy. Well, my life has been quiet, cold and white. My humans are busy with their daily chores and with their art work, and I spend my time eating, patrolling (my patrols get shorter when it is cold) and sleeping, lots of sleeping!

See, I cannot do it anymore. I cannot sleep any longer!

Now, with the sun slowly coming back to Green Creek, Manuela seems more motivated to pull out her camera. Here are some pictures she took yesterday at minus 40 degrees Celsius, when we were out for a walk.

The snow has several significant effects on me and my life: For one, I am growing long warm fur between my toes. That is very functional as long as I walk in dry snow, since it keeps me warm. If I step in overflow though, ice freezes to my toes and that hurts! The best thing I can do in such a situation is go inside and lick it off!

Lance's winter-paws

Something else that has been bothering me is how difficult it is to find decent sticks under the snow. So I fell back on harvesting what they call 'trail markers' for my jousting activities. They grow right next to the trail and are very easy to get to. That, however, did not go very well with Manuela, who forced me to 'drop them'. Here you can see me, two trail markers down next to me and one still standing.

Lance, the culprit – caught in action!

That's enough for one day. Now I DO need a nap.

  1. You're such a good dog, Lance. I can't believe your people won't let you play with the markers.

-40 there yesterday, eh. It was -20 here last night - downright balmy! I'll never complain again.

  2. Your paw looks very warm and fuzzy. And why won't she let you play with the markers? Isn't that why they are there?

  3. Lance, you're a cutie - missed you! Man, I don't blame you for hibernating at those temps. It's great hearing from you again. We kept checking for an update. Think Spring!

  5. Hey buddy!
Great to hear from you, I already thought you would be spending most of your days resting close to the fireplace ;-)
We also had lots of snow here this winter, that's at least what my humans say. It was my first real winter, and they say it will last only a few more weeks and then it will get warmer and green outside.
I cannot remember how spring smells right now, after all I was just a baby last spring. Now I am a big boy too and life is good.
My mom's are looking for a new home again because we have to be moved out of this one by end of June. I like it here and I think so does Cleo, but hey, it's also exciting.
One of my moms goes away every day to work, she is driving those big yellow things on wheels with lots of people in it... I got to visit her one day so that's why I know. I got to sit in the bus and sniff around too.
My other mom works at home, doing a lot of different things in around the house and I get help all the time.
That is fun, especially the vacuum cleaning. And because I help so much we also have time to go for fun walks on the beach and in the neighborhood.
It's fun to read that you and I have the same hobby. I also love to collect sticks and play with them. The bigger the better :)) During the time we had so much snow I also had a hard time to find good sticks. I even tried to bite off new sticks from the bushes and trees. My mom didn't always like that because I can get really carried away when I do that.
Well, I love sticks, what can you do...

Now it is time to go to bed. Hope to read from you again.
Keep us posted on how things are going up there ;-)
    High five!

    Aaron

PS: greetings from my moms and Cleo!
